From a Certain Other Website: Notable people connected with Penicuik include: the papermakers Agnes Campbell, Marjorie Fidler and Alexander Cowan; the founder of Finland's second city, James Finlayson; gas and oil makers John & William Young; the mathematician and seismologist Cargill Gilson Knott FRS and Penicuik's links with Japan; the zoologist James Cossar Ewart FRS; children's writer Helen Bannerman; teacher and writer Athole Cameron; Concorde's Delta Wing Designer, James Hamilton and grain scientist Geoff Palmer.

Author Annie S Swan lived in Gorebridge for many years - the house where she lived is called Aldersyde, the title of one of her novels. Also, actress Annette Crosbie (One Foot in the Grave) also lived in Gorebridge.
